The first thing I thought when I saw the new Rack Variation features in Live 11 was ... 'Can I launch Variations via MIDI?'... Now you can!
Use this Audio Effect device to control Rack Variations via MIDI notes. Place it any where in your Live Set, Click 'map', move a macro on the Rack you want to control, then select a MIDI Input - Then you can use all the possibilities of MIDI to launch Variations (like Chance and MIDI Effects). This device requires Live 11 and Max 8.1
There are 2 modes;
Root: Allows you to set the lowest MIDI Note used to launch a Rack's Variations and each increase in MIDI Note will launch subsequent Variations. This is the quickest way to Chromatically map your MIDI keyboard to launch Variations of a Rack.
Manual: Allows you to manually set which Note launches which Variation, via a floating window for up to 8 Note/Variation pairs. Use this if you want a specific Note to launch a specific Variation, eg; use an existing MIDI track to launch a Rack Variation on a different track.
This device has been created to simplify the control of Variations. Other devices tend to over complicate things by writing too many steps to Live's Undo history or use convoluted ways to control Variations. This device will write one entry to the Undo History each time a Variation is launched, this is unavoidable, but by using MIDI we eradicate any other entries and can leverage the power of MIDI to control Variations in more unique ways.
An earlier version of this device was featured in the following live-stream which covers loads of stuff about Racks;
